Seventh Day Baptists gather every Saturday (Sabbath) to worship God, to share in fellowship, and to rest. Our Statement of Belief explains it this way:
We believe that the Sabbath of the Bible, the seventh day of the week, is sacred time, a gift of God to all people, instituted at creation, affirmed in the Ten Commandments and reaffirmed in the teaching and example of Jesus and the apostles. We believe that the gift of Sabbath rest is an experience of God’s eternal presence with His people. We believe that in obedience to God and in loving response to His grace in Christ, the Sabbath should be faithfully observed as a day of rest, worship, and celebration.
According to the Genesis 1 account of creation, God made all things. Then, at the end of the sixth day, God looked at his work and considered it very good (Genesis 1:31). The seventh day, however, was different from the other six. Yes, the work was done and God rested, but there was another difference: God made the seventh day holy (Genesis 2:3). Nothing else in creation was called holy; not the heavens, not the earth, not the animals, not the people, and not any of the other days. It is only the seventh day that God made holy. Throughout all of scripture, this designation is never undone by God and it is never applied to any other day by God.
As such, the seventh day has been filled with the presence of God in a way unlike any other day. When we enter into worship and fellowship and rest on the seventh day, we are met by the holy presence of God. God established the weekly Sabbath as an opportunity to share in His rest. The Sabbath offers each of us a once-a-week glimpse into the rest that awaits us in heaven.
