The Rhythm Of Life And Death While the SDB World Federation celebrates the addition of two new member conferences, it also mourned the loss of two of its leaders. On February 6, 2018, Pastor Jacob Tyrrell, 81, from the Guyana Conference passed away. Then on February 15, 2018, the same day that Pastor Tyrrell’s body was laid to rest, we were confronted with the sudden and tragic passing of the World Federation’s beloved President, Pastor Jonas Sommer, his wife Clarice, and their two children, Marcos and Paula. They were all killed in a car accident in their homeland of Brazil. The rhythm of life and death is certainly real among us.
Please visit the World Federation website at www.sdbwf.org for more info on the celebration of their lives.
News From the World Federation General Secretary
The World Federation General Secretary, Andy Samuels, traveled to three African countries and conferences in September 2017; Malawi, Uganda and Rwanda. He was accompanied by Pastor Scott Hausrath, from the USA and Canada Conference. They spent a few days teaching doctrinal matters and training Pastors in Malawi. They also participated in the re-dedication of the Naperi Church in Blantyre, Malawi. The church facilities were expanded, renovated, and renamed the David Pearson Station, after the long-serving American Missionary who served in ministry in Malawi for over 30 years. The late Pastor Pearson was also a past President of the SDB World Federation. Pastors Samuels and Hausrath then moved on to Uganda and Rwanda, where they shared in Celebration Services to welcome those two conferences into the membership of the World Federation. It is exciting to see new conferences joining the World Federation fold, and there are others currently working towards that objective.

News From Other Important Trips
The Executive Director of the SDB Missionary Society, Clint Brown, was also busy over the past few months, visiting three World Federation member conferences: Poland, Britain, and the Netherlands. For the visit to Poland, he was accompanied by Pastor Gabriel Bejjani, President Emeritus of the World Federation, and his wife Hayat. In Poland, they engaged in some doctrinal teaching and meetings with the conference leaders. The bond between the Polish Conference and the SDB Missionary Society and the SDB World Federation was significantly strengthened as a result of this visit.
SDB Missionary Society Executive Clint Brown (blue shirt) meets with leaders in Poland, along with Pastor Gabe Bejjani (rust colored shirt), from Riverside, CA USA, and Pastor Jan Lek (across from Clint) from the Netherlands.
In the United Kingdom, the Mission Director taught a mission workshop which included participants from all the UK churches. The brethren there were excited about their newly re-organized conference, and were optimistic about its future. A visit was made to one church in the Netherlands where encouragement and fellowship were provided.
International Week of Prayer
In January 2018, as we’ve been doing since 1967, the SDB World Federation sponsored the international Week of Prayer. The theme was, “The Meeting Place Was Shaken,” and the meditation booklet was prepared by Pastor John Pethtel, World Federation Vice Presi- dent for North America. Booklets were provided to all our member
conferences, and we hope that the majority of those member conferences were able to share in the week of prayer in some way. You are invited to send a note to the General Secretary to indicate how your conference participated in the week of prayer.
Jamaica Retreat for Pastors and Spouses General Secretary Andy Samuels and Vice- President for North America John Pethtel, spent a weekend in March 2018 in Jamaica at a Retreat for Pastors and spouses of the Jamaican SDB Conference. They led sessions in the areas of time management, conflict and criticism.

THE NEXT WORLD FEDERATION SESSIONS IN THE YEAR 2022 We are looking ahead to the next Sessions of the World Federation which will be held in July 2022 hosted by the SDB Conference of the USA & Canada. That may seem like a long way away, but time goes by very quickly. The World Federation will need approximately $62,500 for hosting expenses. This breaks down to an amount of $12,500 each year; over the next five years. We are counting on you to help us raise those funds. A generous tax-deductible contribution today will be appreciated.
The Seventh Day Baptist World Feder- ation is a volunteer organization that is funded entirely by contributions from individuals, associations, church- es and member groups.

IN MEMORIAM Jacob Nathaniel Tyrrell – In 1964, 10 Seventh Day Baptist leaders from 7 differ- ent countries met in Salem, West Virginia, USA in what was called the Consulta- tion of World Conferences (COWOCO). This meeting gave birth the following year to the Seventh Day Baptist World Federation. Jacob Tyrrell, a 28 year old young man from then British Guiana was one of those 10 leaders. Since then, Pastor Tyrell has faithfully and steadily given true servant leadership to his churches and conference in Guyana. Representing his conference, he attended
5 of the 8 Sessions of the World Federation in its 52 year history. At the most recent Session in Brazil in 2017 where he was present, he was honored for being one of the three remaining members of that initial group of 10. Pastor Tyrrell, 81, ended his earthly pilgrimage on February 6, 2018. The World Federation General Secretary was able to attend his Life Celebration Service in Guyana on February 15.

IN MEMORIAM On February 15, as the World Federation General Secretary, Andy Samuels, was standing at the graveside of Pastor Jacob Tyrrell in Guyana, watching the casket being lowered into the grave, he received the horrifying news that earlier that afternoon, the World Federation President, Pastor Jonas Sommer, his wife Clarice, and their children Marcos and Paula, were killed in an automobile accident in their homeland of Brazil. The shock was catastrophic. The 42 year old Pastor Jonas had been one of the brightest lights coming out of the Brazilian SDB Conference. Jonas was the first Brazilian who grew up as a Seventh Day Baptist to obtain a theological degree. At the time of his passing he was the Director of the T.I.M.E. (Training In Ministry by Extension) Program in Brazil, and had successfully trained over 100 pastors and leaders since it began in 2009. So successful was the TIME Program in Brazil, that he was working on arranging a similar Program in the Portuguese-speaking country of Mozambique in Africa. Jonas had started learning English in 2000 in order to help with the preparation for hosting the SDB World Federation Sessions in Brazil in 2003. His mastery of the language was so impressive that he served as the primary translator for every English-speaking Seventh Day Baptist guest to visit Brazil between 2001 and 2017. At the most recent Sessions of the World Federation, held in his native Brazil in January 2017, Jonas was deservedly elected as President of the World Federation. Exactly one month before his passing, he had communicated to the World Federation member Conferences, his vision for the organization over the next five years. The vision summarized says, “Committed To Proclaiming The Gospel Around The World.” That is certainly a reiteration of the Great Commission. That was the heart of our World Federation President.
His wife Clarice was the leader of the Women’s ministry in the Brazilian Conference. She was instrumental in spearheading a drive to make and collect clothing items for children in Africa, so that in 2017 when delegates from Africa attended the World Federation Sessions in Brazil, each of them was able to return home with a
suitcase of clothes for needy children in their conference. Clarice was dynamic and she was fired up for service to the Lord!
Jonas & Clarice Sommer
Seventh Day Baptist WORLD
Their precious 8 year old son Marcos and darling four year old daughter Paula perished with them in that awful car accident. So many questions, so many tears, so much sorrow, so much that we cannot explain, but we trust the unsearchable purpose of our good and gracious God. We are thankful to the Lord that we had Jonas and Clarice for the time we did, and that they gave so much of themselves in that short time. The Seventh Day Baptist World Federation has made plans to establish an endowment in the name of the
Sommer family. The proceeds from this fund will be used to train and develop pastors and leaders of the World Federation member conferences. This is one way that there can be redemption from this calamity. Please give to this very worthy cause.
